Man Utd in ‘no position to underestimate any team’ heading into Newport cup tie

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United are not in a position to underestimate any opponent as his stumbling side look to keep their hopes of silverware alive in Sunday’s FA Cup clash at Newport.

This has been a challenging second season in the hotseat for the Dutchman, whose side languish eighth in the Premier League and were eliminated from European competition before Christmas.

United’s Carabao Cup defence is also long since over, meaning the FA Cup takes on extra significance as their only potential route to a trophy in a disappointing campaign.

“It is the truth,” Ten Hag said. “But it is true that the league, of course, (offers) qualification for the Champions League.

Wednesday woo Westwood

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of former Sunderland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood on a free transfer.

The Republic of Ireland international started last season as first choice at the Stadium of Light, but a shoulder injury last November saw him usurped by Vito Mannone.

Sunderland have also added Costel Pantilimon to their goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign, and Westwood was subsequently not offered a new deal by the Wearsiders.

The 29-year-old, who joined Sunderland from Coventry City in June 2011, has now signed a two-year deal with Wednesday.

Wednesday who finished 16th in the Championship last term were bought by Azerbaijani business Hafiz Mammadov last month.

Mammadov, who owns Ligue 1 outfit Lens, has yet to get ratif…

Cameron Carter-Vickers confident of forming solid partnership with Maik Nawrocki

Cameron Carter-Vickers knows it will take time to form a new central defensive partnership but is encouraged by the early signs of working with Maik Nawrocki.

The pair started in the heart of Celtic’s back four as the champions opened their cinch Premiership season with a 4-2 win over Ross County last weekend.

Carl Starfelt came off the bench for a farewell appearance before completing his move to Celta Vigo in midweek after two years alongside Carter-Vickers.

The United States international said: “It’s always sad when you lose a team-mate, especially one you played so closely with, but for him it was the right decision to move and we wish him nothing but the best.

“All defensive partnerships take a bit of time, it’s the nature of the position. …

Juventus 1-0 Malmo: Kean heads Bianconeri top of Group H

Moise Kean s early header proved enough to earn Juventus a 1-0 Champions League win over Malmo and top spot in Group H on Wednesday.

The Bianconeri controlled the game well but could only muster one goal despite playing a team with just one point to their name.

Federico Bernardeschi s classy cross from the right was one of the few moments of true quality in the final third, which Kean met with a darting run to the near post in the 18th minute.

Malmo rarely threatened in the time that remained, but Juventus never looked like claiming an emphatic win either and their solitary goal proved enough to see them finish above Chelsea, who conceded a 94th-minute equaliser in their 3-3 draw with Zenit.

England 2-0 Germany: Kane off the mark as Sterling strikes again

England claimed their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 as they beat rivals Germany 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Raheem Sterling grabbed his third goal of the tournament to put the Three Lions ahead from a well-worked move in the second half before Harry Kane opened his account with a late header.

Gareth Southgate s side will now face either Sweden or Ukraine in Rome as they look to match 2018 s run to the World Cup semi-finals.

Germany seemed to take a partisan atmosphere at Wembley in their stride early on, making a strong start that was exemplified by Declan Rice receiving a booking for a cynical but entirely necessary challenge on a breaking Leon Goretzka.

Wow. Wow. Wow. is there to double the lead and the quarter-finals are in touching dist…

The 26-year-old joined Marseille from Montpellier in January 2017, and has since made a total of 157 appearances for the French club in all competitions, scoring 25 goals and providing 22 assists. Primarily a central midfielder, he can also play further up as a No.10 if need be.

Villa have sent three players on loan this month Lovre Kalinic to Hajduk Split, Tyreik Wright to Walsall and Conor Hourihane to Swansea, and should this deal be completed, Sanson will be their first signing of the current transfer window. …

Resurgent Shaw expresses ´massive regrets´ over England mistakes

Luke Shaw has spoken of his massive regrets over withdrawing from England squads in the past as the in-form left-back attempts to make up for lost time.

Manchester United defender Shaw made his first international appearance since September 2018 in the Three Lions 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania on Sunday, setting up the opening goal for Harry Kane.

Shaw made his debut back in 2014, but won only his ninth cap in Tirana as Gareth Southgate s side made it two Group I victories out of two.

The 25-year-old has struggled with injuries since joining United from Southampton but is making a strong case to be England s first-choice left-back when Euro 2020 gets under way in June.

Shaw thought he may have blown his chances of representing England again …
