Jamie Carragher believes former Liverpool team-mate Xabi Alonso is the favourite to replace outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Klopp has made the surprise announcement he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, admitting he is “running out of energy” after entering into his ninth year in charge of the club.
While Carragher hopes the German can “go out with a bang”, attention inevitably turns to who will be his successor and Alonso and Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi are the early contenders.
This news was always going to be a body blow to the club whenever it came. I just thought it would be another few years away. What a manager, what a man, let’s go out with a bang Jurgen!

Inter and Sevilla meet for the first time in European competition on Friday in the Europa League final in Cologne.
The Nerazzurri dropped out of the Champions League but have looked impressive in 2020, spearheaded by the fearsome Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.
That said, Inter have only beaten Spanish opposition once in their past 12 attempts, their previous victory coming in a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona 10 years ago.
Sevilla s pedigree in the competition is famous they have won it five times since 2006 but Julen Lopetegui s men have undeniably ridden their luck in the knockout stages since winning their group comfortably ahead of APOEL, Qarabag and Dudelange, even if they are enjoying a club-record run of 20 games without defeat.

According to , MLS expansion club San Diego FC are in advanced talks to sign Spanish veteran defender Sergio Ramos on a free transfer when his contract with Sevilla expires at the end of the season.
Apparently, the 38-year-old centre-back is not expected to renew his commitment to Sevilla. However, though the negotiations are in an advanced stage, no agreement with San Diego has been reached as of yet, and there are other offers from other leagues around the world on Ramos table at this point.
With five La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies from his days at Real Madrid, as well as two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain, Ramos is one of the most successful defenders in the history of the game. He also has 180 caps as a Spain international and was a part …
France s Euro 2012 hopes have been dealt a blow with the news that forward Loic Remy has been ruled out of the tournament through injury.
The Marseille striker had been a major doubt for Poland and Ukraine right from the moment he suffered a thigh strain in his club s Ligue 1 clash with Auxerre on May 13.
Laurent Blanc was determined to give Remy as long as possible to prove his fitness and included the player in his provisional squad, but the French Football Federation (FFF) announced on Friday that Remy had lost his battle to be fit for the Euros.
Despite continuous care, scans have shown that the injury has not healed sufficiently, a statement on the organisation s official website read.
There is too short a time between now and Euro 2012 to expect …
Spain booked a last-16 World Cup clash with hosts Russia after a last-gasp 2-2 draw against already eliminated Morocco in Kaliningrad.
The 2010 champions started Monday on top of Group B but seemed certain to slip below their rivals in the final table as both matches entered stoppage-time with Portugal and Morocco leading.
Spain went behind when Andres Iniesta and captain Sergio Ramos somehow allowed Khalid Boutaib to corral a loose ball and run clear to score Morocco s first goal at the finals since 1998.
Iniesta soon made amends, though, skipping through the Morocco defense to set up Isco, with Spain unable to break down their opponents despite dominating.
When Morocco substitute Youssef En-Nesyri got up highest to thump home a brilliant header f…
West Brom have confirmed they are to open contract talks with head coach Steve Clarke in the new year.
Clarke was appointed in June 2012 after Roy Hodgson departed to take charge of England, and led West Brom to eighth in the Premier League last season.
The Scot s deal at The Hawthorns expires at the end of the current campaign, but the Midlands outfit have revealed they will aim to clarify Clarke s future at the beginning of 2014.
Steve s contract situation was discussed at last month s board meeting, West Brom s sporting and technical director Richard Garlick said in a statement.
We decided that we would open talks with Steve in the New Year which, historically, we feel is the appropriate time to address such matters.

This is his home.

United States winger Joe Gyau will miss the remainder of 2014 due to a knee injury, national coach Jurgen Klinsmann confirmed.
Gyau collected his second international cap against Ecuador on Friday, but hobbled off with a suspected sprained left knee.
The Borussia Dortmund midfielder initially told reporters the injury was not serious following the 1-1 draw in Connecticut, but Klinsmann revealed the 22-year-old will undergo surgery.
Its unfortunately not a little minor thing he is getting surgery back in Germany and he will be out probably until January, Klinsmann said.
Unfortunately that is the result of an MRI that was taken [in Florida], he flew over to Germany and their team doctors decided to have him undergo surgery so he will be out for quite a w…
