Mourinho: Manchester United will sign a midfielder

Manchester United are looking to sign a midfielder in the off-season as a replacement for Michael Carrick, manager Jose Mourinho revealed.

Veteran Englishman Carrick, 36, will retire at the end of the season before taking up a role on United s coaching staff.

Paul Pogba, whose performances have been scrutinised in recent weeks, arrived in Mourinho s first season in charge, while Nemanja Matic was lured away from Chelsea before the 2017-18 campaign.

And Mourinho reiterated his desire to sign another midfielder to ease the pressure on Pogba amid links with the likes of Lazio s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Nice star Jean Michael Seri.

Jose Mourinho commented on the media speculation surrounding Paul Pogba, at his press conference:

Swansea in talks with Napoli over Michu

Swansea City are in talks with Napoli over the transfer of forward Michu, according to chairman Huw Jenkins.

The Spaniard has been strongly linked with a move away from the Liberty Stadium in recent weeks, and did not travel to the United States for the club s pre-season tour.

Jenkins has now revealed talks have taken place regarding a potential switch to Serie A.

Napoli have enquired about Michu and we have been talking to them and to Michu s agent, he is quoted as saying by the South Wales Evening Post.

But there are other options and nothing is finalised yet.

When asked whether the talks involved a loan or permanent deal, Jenkins added: We are discussing various options.

Michu arrived in south Wales for a fee of £2.2million from Ra…

Real yet to agree deal for Navas

Levante president Quico Catalan has confirmed that Real Madrid are in talks to sign Keylor Navas, although a deal is yet to be finalised.

Goalkeeper Navas stock has risen significantly off the back of a fine showing at the FIFA World Cup, in which he helped Costa Rica to the quarter-finals in Brazil.

Both Real and Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old shot-stopper, who missed just one of Levante s La Liga games last season.

Navas has a €10million release clause in his contract but, while Real appear keen to lure him to the Santiago Bernabeau, Catalan insists an agreement remains a way off.

Madrid spoke with us and the deal is still not closed, Catalan is quoted as saying by AS.

But certainly in the end Keylor will fulf…

MLS: Red Bulls claim maiden road win, New England blow two-goal lead

Brazilian pair Carlos Coronel and Fabio starred as New York Red Bulls secured a big road win 2-1 against Orlando City in the MLS on Saturday.

Fabio scored the 79th-minute winner, his second goal of the season, after Coronel had saved Mauricio Pereyra s penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Venezuelan midfielder Cristian Casseres fired in an excellent left-foot strike to open the scoring in the sixth minute but Orlando had a chance to level moments before half-time.

Uruguayan midfielder Pereyra shot low to Coronel s left but the Brazilian dived well and palmed away the spot-kick.

Pereyra partly made up for his miss, laying off the pass for Chris Mueller to equalize high into the back of the net in the 59th minute.

But Fabio held off a defender to fir…

Aguero makes Man City bench but no Jesus against Southampton

Gabriel Jesus was a surprise absentee and Sergio Aguero only made the bench as Manchester City attempted to return to winning ways at Southampton in the Premier League.

Brazilian striker Jesus has scored just twice in the Premier League this season, but it was fitness rather than form which saw him sidelined for the clash with Saints on Saturday.

City said Jesus and defender Aymeric Laporte, also missing from the 20-man matchday squad, were not fully fit for the match at St Mary s.

Aguero, however, was healthy enough to take his place among the nine substitutes upped this week from seven in a move to allow for concussion replacements.

The striker has struggled for fitness this season and missed training after the West Brom game, but he took part on Frid…

Chiellini fires warning to Juventus ahead of Fiorentina clash

Giorgio Chiellini has warned Juventus that they are running out of time to be ready to start their Serie A title defence against Fiorentina on Sunday.

Massimiliano Allegri s side have had mixed results in pre-season, with a win over Tottenham in the International Champions Cup not enough to dispel doubts raised from a penalty shootout defeat to Melbourne Victory and a 2-2 draw with Espanyol.

Juve endured a miserable start to their title defence in 2015-16, taking just three wins from their first 10 matches, before a remarkable run of 26 victories in their final 28 games saw them clinch a fifth Scudetto in a row.

And Chiellini has urged his team-mates to sharpen up this week in order to avoid another disappointing start to the campaign against a strong Fiorentina …

Fiorentina secure Salcedo loan deal

Fiorentina are set to complete the loan signing of Carlos Salcedo from Chivas Guadalajara.

Defender Salcedo has been capped five times by Mexico and represented his country at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The 22-year-old will undergo a medical in Florence on Tuesday ahead of a temporary move with a view to a permanent transfer.

An official Fiorentina statement read: Fiorentina announces it has acquired the rights to Mexican defender Carlos Salcedo from Chivas Guadalajara on a temporary basis with the option to buy.

Salcedo spent part of his youth career at Guadalajara and Tigres UANL before joining MLS side Real Salt Lake, who he left to return to Chivas in 2015.

Marchisio: Allegri´s philosophy will boost Juve´s Europe hopes

Claudio Marchisio believes Massimiliano Allegri s emphasis on possession football will help Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.

Allegri was chosen to replace former head coach Antonio Conte, who surprisingly tendered his resignation in July.

Under Conte who has since been named Italy boss Juve won three straight Serie A titles, but failed to make an impression in Europe s premier competition.

Midfielder Marchisio hailed the style of both coaches, but feels Juve will be able to improve in the Champions League under Allegri.

With Conte everything was more planned and the results speak for themselves three league titles in a row and two Super Cups, he told Tuttosport.

Now it is different, Allegri has a different idea of the game, as we saw agai…

Mata wishes Kagawa well

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has issued a fond farewell to Shinji Kagawa after the Japan international rejoined Borussia Dortmund.

Kagawa was unable to exhibit his best form at Old Trafford following a move from Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles, in 2012.

Having struggled to nail down a regular starting berth in his preferred playmaker role, the 26-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by new United boss Louis van Gaal and sealed a return to Signal Iduna Park on Sunday.

Writing in his latest blog, Mata said of his former team-mate: I would like to wish all the best to Shinji Kagawa, a fantastic player but especially a great person.

It s been a pleasure to be his team-mate and I m sure both Borussia Dortmund and fans everywhere …

Chelsea dismissal ´harsh´ on Potter, believes Blues great Poyet

Graham Potter s Chelsea dismissal was harsh but ultimately the price of failing to meet expectations, according to Blues great Gus Poyet.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager was appointed to replace Thomas Tuchel last September as new co-owner Todd Boehly began to make his presence known at Stamford Bridge.

But after slipping to 11th in the Premier League with defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend, Potter was sacked just over six months into the job.

Poyet, a Chelsea cult hero and former Brighton boss himself, feels the decision to fire the 47-year-old was a tough one but ultimately unsurprising given their slide down the table.

I think it was a difficult period, he told Stats Perform. They had a few good results, especially in the Champions Leagu…
